The good and the bad

First, let’s get the bad news out of the way: IsLANd 4 has been postponed due to some unfortunate events. At this point in time our contact at the VITP has changed offices, leaving us with no venue for the time being.

BCGamer is proud to announce that we will once again be assisting with Gottacon in February of 2013. We’ll be running the non-competitive events and putting up some servers for the entire weekend (tentatively CS:GO, DayZ Lingor, Minecraft, among many others). Some of you may remember that last year we had 20 guys go and received a package deal. If anyone is interested in heading that up for 2013 or would like to throw down early for a cheap ticket shoot me an email: Justin@BCGamer.com

Gear up for Gibfest 2012

This Saturday at Luxton Hall in Langford BCGamer will be hosting Victoria’s BIGGEST Summer LAN party. Arrive at 9 Am for tournament registration and PC setup. Please make sure that Windows Simple File Sharing IS TURNED OFF and that a decent Anti-Virus (such as Microsoft Security Essentials) is installed and running.

There will be 4 Major tournaments: Starcraft 1v1, Team Fortress 2 5v5, League of Legends 5v5, and Battlefield 3 4v4. On top of that we will have several servers running the entire length of the day including DayZ – Lingor Island (Version 032, Arma 2 Beta 95417), Team Fortress 2, Cod4:MW1, Counter Strike Source, and Minecraft to name a few.

Things to bring:

  • $20 Entry, more for snacks
  • Your computer (there WILL NOT be lenders)
  • Headphones (Leave the speakers at home)
  • A 20-25′ network cable (there will be some for sale on site for $10)
  • Power bar with at least a 6′ cord!
  • A good attitude :)
  • No booze, no drugs.
  • Updated Games

We hope to see you there!

Prepping for the (or ANY) LAN

Hi Everyone, this is graphite, here to provide you some LAN prep tips!

Frequently, we ask people to prep their computer for LANs, be it patching computers to having their network properly setup, to simple things such as antivirus. Often, people either forget to do these things or don’t know exactly how. I’d like to go over some important ones!

Steps To Prep your computer for a LAN:

1. Backup your important files, bring install CD’s: If a LAN spreads a virus or the power trips, the worst could happen and you might need to do a reinstall. Bring your copy of Win7 (and network drivers!!) to the LAN. You’ll be thankful if you need to reinstall!

2. Update your computer: Have you ran windows update recently? Have you installed your latest graphics card drivers?

3: Cleaning your computer (Physically): When was the last time you looked inside your tower? Is there a small mountain of dust jamming up your heatsinks? Turn off the computer, lay it down, and carefully blow the air out with canned air or a compressor — outside or in the garage!

4: Cleaning your computer (Digitally): If you have Microsoft Security Essentials, Nod32, Norton, Endpoint, Kaspersky, you’ve got decent antivirus. Make sure it’s up to date. If you have avast/avg/avira/PANDA, please get something better. Microsoft Security Essentials is free and powerful.

5: Defrag & Optimize: Go get auslogics from ninite.com (actually, use ninite.com for most installers, its pretty rad!), do a full defrag & optimize on your C: Drive.

6: UPDATE! Make sure the games you’re coming to play open and run on your computer, does your SC2/BF2/TF2/LOL open and run fine on your computer?

7. CABLES: When going to the LAN, we _always_ see people who forget power cables/power bars, their monitor cable etc. Triple check that you’ve got all of your cables, heck bring a spare along!

8. Storage: Several hundred gigs of free space on your hard drive. Just incase you need to install some games on short notice.

9. Mousepad: Dont forget these, old wooden tables are not extremely comfortable mousing surfaces!

Steps to prep Yourself for the LAN:

1. A plan of who you want to sit with or near: Are your buddies going? Coordinate with them so you can all sit together!

2: Money for snacks: It’s a good idea to bring along some money for drinks & snacks!

3: A good night’s sleep: Seriously — the amount of people who come to our LAN already exhausted is alarming — you’re not going to have nearly as much fun if you’re not rested & relaxed.

4: Expectation to play pick-up with other people you meet at the LAN: if you get knocked out of a tourney — there’s likely someone else there who’ll play one of MANY games with you (in addition to the slew of servers we will have up and running), ask around, make friends and have fun!

Alright, that’s about it for now, see you on the 18th!

GIBFEST Tournament Lineup

We here at BC Gamer are proud to announce our Tournament lineup for our upcoming GIBFEST event. You will be able to compete for prizes in the following games:

StarCraft 2 1v1: Think you got the best micro/macro on Vancouver Island? Now it’s your time to shine. Come Show us why your main race is OP and have the rest raging for nerfs to Blizzard.

League of Legends 5v5: Last hitting and mega builds will be crucial if you and your team want to avoid defeat. Gather your friends and claim victory.

Battlefield 3 4v4: Rush is the name of the game but be careful not to abide by it because you and your team will need some steady aim and strategy if you want to take home the gold in our Battlefield tournament.

Team Fortress 2 5v5: What makes you a good demoman? Why don’t you come show us. Are you good enough to protect your teams Medic while also taking the point? Can you rocket jump your way to victory? I guess its only a matter of time before we find out. (Item ban list tentative so keep checking with us for more info on that)

Now that the lineup is out, gather your friends, work on your strats and be ready to come with your A game.

Serving up DayZ

We’ve got a quick note here on the DayZ front. Aramec, one of our members, has graciously provided a server for our benefit. Check out Seattle 136, you’ll not be disappointed.  - Mautobu
